GENERIKA romped to its fourth consecutive win as the Life Savers edged the Cignal HD Spikers, 25-19, 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 15-9, on Wednesday in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Natalia Korobkova unloaded 26 points, including the last three points of the match, while former La Salle stars Aby Marano, Cha Curz and Paneng Mercado added 14, 13 and 11, respectively, for Generika. Micmic Laborte of La Salle Bacolod chipped in 10.
The Life Savers scored their fifth win in eight matches and secured a spot in the semifinals. The HD Lady Spikers absorbed their fourth consecutive loss for a 3-5 card.
“Target lang namin makapasok ng semifinals, No. 3 or No. 4,” said Generika coach Ramil de Jesus. “Hindi naman namin tinatarget ang No. 1 kasi wala namang advantage ’yun.”
The Lifesavers have improved much and now look a lot different than the sluggish squad that lost in straight sets to newcomer Mane 'N Tail.
“Ang sabi ko sa kanila ’wag na natin hayaan na maulit ang pinaka pangit na talo,” said De Jesus. “Isipin niyo na nag-training kayo under sa akin at dahil doon designed kayo na manalo.”
But the Life Savers actually still have problems keeping their energy up. After taking a two-set lead, Generika collapsed in the third and fourth sets before regaining control in the deciding set with an early 6-1 lead.
Imports Sarah Ammerman and Lindsay Stalzer pushed Cignal to, 9-12, but Korobkova scored three straight points to finish the match.
Stalzer finished with 24 points for Cignal, while Ammerman added 17 and Abigail Praca chipped in 10.
