CIGNAL downed league newcomer Mane ‘N Tale, 25-15, 22-25, 25-19, 26-24, on Wednesday to take the solo lead in the 2014 Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at the Cuneta Astrodome.
American imports Lindsay Stalzer and Sarah Ammerman led the way anew for the HD Lady Spikers, scoring 25 and 22 points, respectively.
Cignal, which clobbered RC Cola, 25-17, 25-23, 25-23, in the opener, is now on top with a 2-0 win-loss card but HD Lady Spikers mentor Sammy Acaylar says it is too early to tell how far they can go in the tournament.
“Sabi nga nila team to beat kami, it’s flattering but as a coach I don't want to underestimate other teams kasi malalakas ang imports nila,” said Acaylar.
Cignal was two points from sealing the win when Mane ‘N Tail came up with some fine plays to stretch the set.
Ivy Remulla and Rossan Fajardo scored for to inch closer 22-23 before an error by Mitch Datuin pushed Cignal to match point.
The Lady Stallions still had some fight in them and Kristy Jaeckel and Kaylee Manns combined to tie the game at 24.
But Ammerman put Cignal ahead and the HD Spikers got the win when Jaeckel sent the ball long.
“Actually nataranta ako noong nag-tie sa 24-all," revealed Acaylar. "But lastly sabi ko lang mag focus. Ang sabi ko sa players ko 'wag masyado magfocus sa open spikers, use more combination plays."
Jaeckel came up with 31 points from 29 hits and two blocks for Mane N' Tail.
