DEFENDING champion Petron recorded 13 straight wins for the third time in team history, demolishing Sta. Lucia, 25-21, 25-12, 25-20, on Thursday in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the Arena in San Juan.
Stephanie Niemer had 23 points for the Blaze Spikers as Petron matched its 13-0 run to the All-Filipino Conference title in 2015 under George Pascua.
The Blaze Spikers also went 13 straight wins in the same tournament last year under coach Shaq Delos Santos, with F2 Logistics preventing them from extending the streak with victory in the second match of the best-of-three finals. Petron went on to win the decider.
“Siyempre happy kasi nagagawa namin ulit yung ginagawa namin last conference pero mas kailangan din namin magfocus ngayon sa kailangan namin i-perform sa mga susunod na mga games,” said De los Santos.
Petron tries to extend the streak when it faces United Volleyball Club on Saturday.
“Sobrang nakakaproud kasi siyempre hindi siya madaling gawin, worth it lang na yun yung kapalit ng paghihirap namin,” Delos Santos said. “Kailangan mas magtuloy tuloy pa rin kami kasi meron kaming ganito why not kung maiimprove pa namin.”
Niemer had 17 spikes, three blocks and as many as service aces including 10 digs and seven excellent receptions, while Katherine Bell had 12 kills for 13 points while making 11 digs. Mika Reyes scored seven.
Casey Schoenlein scored 12 and Molly Lohman added eight for Sta. Lucia, which suffered its 10th loss in 12 matches.
