STA. Lucia stunned erstwhile undefeated Petron, 25-18, 25-21, 25-17, in the second round of elimination in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix on Thursday at The Arena in San Juan.
Ukrainian import Bohdana Anisova finished with 14 points for the Lady Realtors, while MJ Philips added 13 and Canadian reinforcement Marisa Field had 10 markers.
The long break worked for Sta. Lucia as the team had a counseling session with its sports psychologist that helped the players become mentally tough.
“‘Yung mental toughness nila, walang panapos sa huli. Kaya nagakaroon kami ng session about mental toughness tapos after that nagtraining kami for this game,” said Sta. Lucia coach George Pascua.
“Nawala ‘yung fear nila na Petron ang kalaban, undefeated,” he added. “Sabi ko sa kanila no matter what pare-pareho kayong volleyball players, kung sino ang may desire na manalo, ‘yun ang mananalo as long as you work as a team.”
The Lady Realtors improved to 4-5, while the Blaze Spikers slid to 8-1.
American imports Lindsay Stalzer and Hillary Hurley made 19 and 15 points, respectively, for Petron.
The Blaze Spikers gave away 28 extra points to the Lady Realtors courtesy of their errors in the match that took an hour and 24 minutes to finish.
