STA. Lucia defeated Smart, 25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22, in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Ukrainian import Bohdana Anisova scored 23 points as the Lady Realtors improved to 3-3 to tie Cignal for the No. 4 spot.
Canadian reinforcement Marisa Field scored 15 and Fil-Am MJ Phillips added 14 for Sta. Lucia, which faces Foton on Thursday to end the first round.
“For sure, in my opinion, it’s our focus that we need to work on. ‘Cause we really do play well as a team but today when we were ahead then we let up on our mental focus,” said Field.
“It gave the other team the chance to comeback at us, so we have to keep that beast mode mindset for the whole game,” she added.
Field stressed that allowing Smart import Gyselle de la Caridad Silva to score 40 points proved that they had some lapses on defense.
“We knew going in that she gets a lot of balls and that was our key focus and at the beginning we got a pretty good job of handling her,” she said.
“But later on we let her score so much and she was on a roll and she really had a good game and we didn’t stop her like the way we wanted to,” she added.
Silva was one point shy of matching the league record 41 points set by Cocolife import Sara Klisura when she suited up for Foton last year.
The Cuban import also had 17 excellent receptions for Smart, winless in seven outings.
The No. 1 team after the first round will be grouped in Pool A together with the No. 3, No. 6 and No. 8 teams.
Meanwhile the second seed will join the fourth, fifth and seventh seeds in Pool B for another round of action.
