THE San Miguel Corporation continued to show its excellence in sports this year as the Petron Blaze Spikers capped the company’s successful 2018 by ruling the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference.
The Blaze Spikers completed a golden repeat in the All-Filipino Conference and won two of the three PSL conferences following the Grand Prix title run last summer.
The winningest PSL club team, which has five championships, joins the successful runs of basketball counterparts San Miguel Beermen, Barangay Ginebra Kings, and the Magnolia Hotshots, each ruling one of the three conferences in the PBA’s 43rd season.
The Beermen completed a historic four consecutive championship reign in the Philippine Cup beating the Hotshots in the Finals last April, while the Gin Kings won their first Commissioner’s Cup in 21 years by defeating Beermen last August.
The Hotshots, for their part, finally broke a four-year title drought by outlasting the Alaska Aces in Game Six, 102-86, to rule the Governors’ Cup last Wednesday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.
A day after, Petron reigned supreme in the All-Filipino Conference as it swept F2 Logistics, 25-22, 26-24, 25-23, in the winner-take-all Game Three before an ecstatic capacity crowd at the Arena in San Juan City.
Blaze Spikers head coach Shaq Delos Santos said that their successful PSL season is also a way of giving back to their ever-supportive team owners and managers from SMC.
“Siyempre happy kami kasi isa 'to sa way para masuklian namin 'yung kabaitan and kabutihan na binibigay nila sa amin. As in, never kami kinakalimutan,” Delos Santos said. “Pagka may kailangan or support talaga, lahat binibigay sa amin. Sobrang thankful kami kasi napaka-bait ng management namin. So for us, sobrang happy kasi nabigyan, napapasaya din namin sila.”
Asked by the reporters if SMC will give them incentives for their success, Delos Santos said that they don’t know yet but regardless of the bonus, they are just happy to win it all for the management.
“Wala pa, hindi pa natin alam eh. Basta kami, ano, thankful lang kami kasi meron na kami nito (championship),” he said. “Kung meron mang darating pang blessings, sobrang bonus na para sa amin 'yun.”
