SISI Rondina embraced her role as Petron’s sparkplug off the bench and it paid off.
Behind the success of the Blaze Spikers’ golden repeat in the 2018 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference was Rondina’s infectious energy and ferocious kills every time she enters the court.
With Petron’s deep bench loaded with outside hitters Ces Molina and Bernadeth Pons, the UST superstar Rondina was reduced to a second stringer, but she gladly accepted the role and it worked as the Blaze Spikers earned their fifth franchise title at the expense of F2 Logistics.
“I always think the word talaga na sinasabi ni coach, na 'Bala kita. Mag-ready ka lang,’” shared Rondina on what head coach Shaq Delos Santos has been telling her during the campaign.
And she responded: “Coach, maglaro lang sila, wala akong problema dito. Kayang-kaya ko 'yung binigay niyong role, and ta-trabahuhin ko 'yun coach with love talaga.”
“Lahat ng binibigay ni coach na advice walang problema sa akin. As long as nakakatulong ako sa team,” Rondina added.
The high-leaping 5-foot-6 outside hitter showed her worth in each games played coming off the bench becoming the vital part of Petron’s historic 13-game winning streak, where she rose to the occasion in Game 1 of the Finals to beat F2 Logistics in straight sets and tie the team’s 13-0 record back in 2015.
And even though she usually played limited minutes, Rondina didn't complain as long as it's for the good of the team.
“They're giving their best for our team, wala akong problema doon. As long as we play, our willingness to win, and our goal na ma-achieve, ayun, nag-champion kami, and thanks to our teammates,” the Cebuana said. “Lahat, sa Petron family, sa coaches na hindi talaga nagsawang turuan kami kahit sobrang pagod na, andoon pa rin 'yung kagustuhan na matuto. And lalong-lalo na 'yung pusong palaban, 'yung gustong manalo talaga.”
Now that the PSL season is over, Rondina is shifting her focus back on UST as she plays her final year in UAAP Season 81.
The league’s reigning Best Scorer hopes that she will be able to share all her learnings and success with Petron to the Tigresses.
“Sana itong natutunan ko sa PSL, sa Petron, mahawa ko yung teammates ko,” Rondina said. “Sana itong pagka-panalong ito, may nakita ng mga teammates ko kung ano talaga 'yung attitude na gusto ‘yung winning talaga. Sana mahawa ko sila and sana mag-cooperate sila for my last season.”
