BINAN, Laguna – Shopinas.com hardly showed its lack of preparation as it turned back Mane ‘N Tail, 25-22, 25-22, 16-25, 25-12 in a rousing debut in the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference at Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna on Thursday.
The Shopinas.com only had three practice sessions for the conference and coach Ramil de Jesus only attended the day before the match.
The Lady Clickers had a balance scoring behind rookie Kim Dy, who unloaded 17 points including four blocks, Paneng Mercado with 10, Arianna Angustia with nine, while Micmic Laborte and Cha Cruz contributed eight apiece.
Rizza Mandapat, the fourth overall pick in the Rookie Draft, debuted with six points for the Lady Clickers, formerly the Generika Life Savers.
And to think the team only had three practice sessions prior to the tournament, with coach Ramil Cruz only attending the training a day before the match.
“First win namin pilit na pilit. Kulang pa kasi ang preparation namin,” said de Jesus.
“Si Kim expected ko 'yun sa kanya lalo na sa blocking at sa atake,” added the veteran mentor.
Mane 'N Tail led by as much as 10 points in the third set, 20-10, to extend the match.
But Shopinas.com regained momentum in the fourth and built its own 20-10 bulge, which it stretched to 23-10 en route to the victory.
Former La Salle players Aby Maraño, Michele Gumabao, and Melissa Gohing, who formed part of Generika’s core last year, are no longer part of the lineup after deciding to take their acts with other teams.
The trio was instrumental in the team's back-to-back runner up finishes in last year's All Filipino and Grand Prix conferences, respectively.
Former Cignal players Honey Tubino and Abigail Praca came away with 14 and 12 points, respectively, to lead Mane 'N Tail, while skipper Jill Gustillo and Danika Gendrauli added nine markers apiece.
