SHOPINAS.COM survived two set points in the third canto to turn back expansion team Philips Gold, 25-18, 26-24, 29-27, and gain a share of the lead in the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Sunday.
Former La Salle standouts Paneng Mercado and Cha Cruz scored nine markers apiece while skipper Micmic Laborte had eight points for the Lady Clickers, who tied idle Petron at the top top.
Coach Ramil de Jesus said he did not expect the Shopinas to start with a perfect 2-0 card, although the veteran mentor was pleased to see the Lady Clickers follow all of his instructions.
“Kahit papano nakakatuwa kasi nasusunod nila ang instructions ko,” he said.
“(Pero) hindi ko ine-expect (ang 2-0 start),” said de Jesus. “Mahirap kasi ang takbo ng team 'di pa rin gaano magkakakilala ang mga players, naga-aadjust pa.”
Down by two sets, Philips Gold appeared ready to extend the match after No. 7 rookie pick Desiree Dadang scored on a block to give the Lady Slammers their first set point, 24-23.
But Shopinas.com wasn’t about to roll over and die and readily snatched the lead back courtesy of a Leuseht Dawis service error and a Laborte quick attack, 25-24.
Philips Gold answered with a 3-1 spurt to reach a second set point, 27-26, but two service miscues sandwiched Kim Dy's block on Michele Gumabao sealed the win for Shopinas.com.
Gumabao, the Lady Slammers team captain, had 13 points while Myla Pablo added nine as Philips Gold suffered a second straight loss.
