SAMMY Acaylar resigned as head coach of Sta. Lucia three weeks before the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix kicks off on October 21.
The seasoned mentor, who tendered his resignation on Monday, cited his hectic schedule as the reason for his decision to step down.
“My schedule is really tight and I don’t want to be unfair to Sta. Lucia that is why I decided to resign,” said Acaylar.
Aside from the men’s national team, Acaylar is also the head coach of the University of the East men’s volleyball team in the UAAP and University of Perpetual Help women’s volleyball team in the NCAA on top of being Perpetual’s athletic director.
In fact, Acaylar will be part of the NCAA management committee as Perpetual hosts the NCAA Season 94 next year.
Meanwhile, Acaylar is still hoping for the Lady Realtors’ success in the import-flavored PSL conference.
Despite his resignation, Sta. Lucia still has a solid backbone with Filipino-American MJ Philips and Rebecca Rivera and veterans Djanel Cheng, Janine Navarro and Lourdes Clemente along with imports Marisa Field and Kristen Moncks, national team members of Canada, and Slavina Koleva of Bulgaria.
“They are still a strong team, I’m very optimistic that they can reach their goal,” he said. “I wish them well in the Grand Prix.”
