CIGNAL defeated Iriga City, 26-24, 25-23, 25-17, to snap a two-match skid in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix on Saturday at Malolos Sports and Convention Center in Bulacan.
Jovelyn Gonzaga had 15 points, three digs and four excellent receptions for the HD Spikers, who improved to a 2-3 win-loss card and tied Generika-Ayala for fifth.
American import Alexis Matthews and Australian reinforcement Beth Carey each had 10 markers for Cignal.
“Ayun overwhelming ’yung panalo dahil galing din kami sa ilang talo,” said Cignal coach George Pascua.
Down, 6-9, in the third set, the HD Spikers countered with a 7-0 run to take the lead, 13-9.
Serbian import Tamara Kmezic stopped the bleeding for Iriga but a 5-1 run put Cignal on a comfortable position to take the win, 18-10.
It was a morale-boosting victory for the HD Spikers, who struggled in their previous matches.
“Hopefully, masustain naming ’yung winning character ng mga players. Kailangan maovercome namin ang pressure dahil nga champion team kami ng invitationals,” said Pascua.
Kmezic led all scorers with 22 points but that was just not enough for the Oragons, who started the conference with a five-set victory over Cocolife, absorbed their third straight loss.
Japanese Saam Miyagawa made 14 markers for Iriga.
