RC Cola Army dominated Generika, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15, 25-19, to open its campaign in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix on a bright note on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Jovelyn Gonzaga finished with 14 points, 19 digs and seven excellent receptions for the Lady Troopers while American import Hailey Ripley added 13 and Royse Tubino chipped in 12.
Kierra Holst and Rachel Anne Daquis, who got injured halfway into the third set, came up with nine markers apiece while new recruit Lutgarda Malaluan contributed eight for RC Cola Army.
Despite the good start, coach Kungfu Reyes believes the team is still far from top form.
“Malayo pa kami sa katotohanan, kailangan namin mag double time,” he said. “Wala pa sa playing mode ang mga imports namin pero may skills pa rin naman sila at saka napakalaking tulong nila sa amin sa blocking.
"Kasi sa opensa kaya naman umiskor ng locals eh, sa depensa talaga sila maaasahan, iba na ang matangkad,” he added.
The three-time titlists are now tied with defending champion Foton (1-0) for the early lead.
Ukrainian import Polina Liutikova led the way with 15 points while University of Santo Tomas middle blocker Ria Meneses added 10 for Generika, which fell to 0-2.
