TWO old rivals were happy to see each other again after clashing in a different battlefield in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference.
Ramil de Jesus and Roger Gorayeb, two of the most brilliant volleyball coaches in the country, played against each other for the first time in two years — since Gorayeb’s last year with National University in UAAP Season 79.
De Jesus had the last laugh as the F2 Logistics swept Smart in straight sets, 25-11, 25-22, 25-17, on Thursday at the Arena in San Juan City.
It was the most anticipated storyline in Gorayeb‘s league comeback in meeting de Jesus, his rival coach since the Ateneo-De La Salle rivalry in UAAP boomed last 2011.
The rivalry’s intensity even affected their relationship before. But after their PSL game, the two coaches shook hands showing that time healed their wounds.
“Wala naman okay naman,” De Jesus said. “Kaibigan naman natin si coach Roger so kung ano man yung naging issue dati siguro pinalaki lang nung mga nasa social media.”
Gorayeb, who coached Ateneo from Season 70 to 75 before mentoring NU from Seasons 77 to 79, agreed that there is no more issue between him and the long-time De La Salle coach.
“Wala ng issue doon. Tapos na 'yun. Meron 'yun, pero di na pag-uusapan. Wala na 'yun,” the Smart said.
Gorayeb, for his part, was reminiscent of his relationship with De Jesus when they coached the national youth team in 1994 together with fellow veteran mentor Nes Pamilar.
“Sa amin, naman eh. Ka-batch ko 'yan sa National Team. Siya, ako, si Nestor. 1994 sa youth team kami noon. Magkakasabay kami noon,” he said. “Okay naman kaming dalawa, wala namang problema.”
