RACHEL Anne Daquis was really eager to bring back Cignal’s winning ways that’s why she stepped up when it mattered most in their nail-biting five-set triumph over Generika-Ayala in the 2018 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference on Saturday at the Alonte Sports Center in Biñan City.

Down 12-13 in the decider, Daquis came to the rescue, tying the game and even saving the two match-point advantage before the HD Spikers overcame the Lifesavers in a thriller, 26-24, 17-25, 25-22, 20-25, 17-15.

“Talagang all-out na ako, palo kung palo. Gustong-gusto ko kasi talaga manalo para sa team,” said Daquis, who finished with 20 points including a tremendous defensive effort of 17 digs and 13 excellent receptions.

Cignal head coach Edgar Barroga knew that the team captain would step up in the crucial moments of the game.

“Sa ganoong sitwasyon kay Rachel pa rin kasi siya na nagdala nung huli e,” Barroga said. “Although, maganda ‘yung ginawa ni Mylene noong una pero ang kagandahan ‘yung crucial game si Rachel pa rin ang nagdala.”

The former Far Eastern University superstar expressed that she was hungry to redeem themselves from a frustrating four-set loss to Foton last Wednesday, where things heated up between Barroga and the officials, who slapped the Cignal coach with a red card and sent him to the penalty box.

All the HD Spikers were emotional and hugged each other after the huge win, Daquis said that the conquest is a testament that they learned from that setback.

“Siyempre, sa lahat ng pinagdadaanan namin, natuwa talaga kami. 'Yung mga ganoon 'yung nagpapatibay sa amin,” she said. “Magandang learning para sa amin. Lumalabas na lahat ng mga nagiging problema. 'Yun kasi 'yung nagmo-mold sa amin para maging strong pa as a team.”

With an improved 2-2 win-loss record getting those two wins both in five sets — including last week’s triumph over Cocolife, Daquis believes that the best is yet to come for the HD Spikers as Honey Royse Tubino already missed two games due to military duties.

“Siguro dapat makumpleto na kami. Si Royse di pa nakaka-ensayo,” she said. “Siguro, mabigyan lang kami ng chance na makapag-ensayo nang sabay-sabay, magiging malakas pa 'yung team.”
