AFTER four successful conferences, the Philippine Super Liga is about to spread its wings.
A beach volleyball tournament for both men and women, together with a Champions League, are among the new treats to be included in the PSL calendar for next year.
PSL president Tats Suzara said the demand to have a beach volleyball tournament forced league organizers to put up one by 2015. Games will be played during the offseason at The Fort in Taguig City.
“We are planning to have a PSL beach volleyball,” said Suzara. “There's a demand this year but I think next year we can push through with two beach volleyball events.”
“We'll try to plan this because this is a new development, it's just a weekend or two weekends.”
In coordination with Taguig City Rep. Lino Cayetano and Mayor Lani Cayetano, the PSL is planning to put up an Olympic standard sand court at the heart of Bonifacio Global City.
Rep. Cayetano, who once played the game for University of the Philippines, incidentally, is married to former Ateneo volleyball star Fille Cainglet
“They (Cayetano’s) wanted to have a beach volley tournament at night. So ang mangyayari ay maglalagay sila ng ilaw doon mismo sa itatayong beach volley court para puwedeng paglaruan sa umaga at tournament sa gabi,” said Suzara.
Meanwhile, the Champions League will feature champion teams from the UAAP, NCAA, Shakey’s V-League, and the PSL competing against each other in a tournament.
“We will have PSL Champion's League. Mga two weeks lang siguro 'yun,” said Suzara. “My idea is to invite the champion of the UAAP, NCAA, and the champion of the Shakey's V-League and the champion of the PSL after the All-Filipino Conference.”
The All Filipino Conference kicks off on March 8.
