PHILIPS Gold gained the lead in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix after an easy win over Cignal, 25-22, 25-14, 25-23, on Thursday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Slammers American imports led the way, with Bojana Todorovic scoring 19 and Alexis Olgard adding 14.
Philips Gold holds a 7-2 win-loss card, ahead of idle Petron (6-2), while Cignal dropped to third place at 6-3.
Philips Gold coach Francis Vicente said he wasn’t surprised with the quick win.
“Confidently, yes, I expected an easy win. Kasi pinaghandaan namin syempre,” said Vicente.
“Ang motivation you can give the players is, they are skilful na eh, so just don’t mind the mistakes, pag-aralan mabuti, kung meron man, ’wag na magsisihan basta laban lang at maging masaya lang sa loob ng court,” he added.
The local players also delivered, with Myla Pablo scoring 13 and Michele Gumabao adding nine, while libero Melissa Gohing registered nine digs and seven receptions.
“’Yun din ang pinapratice namin, I don’t want them to rely too much sa foreigners kailangan din ng locals na mag step up kasi playing on international stage we have to step up,” he said.
“Nag-standout for me is ‘yung libero, si Myla, and Michele, sila minsan sumasalo sa import and that’s what you call team,” he added.
Amanda Anderson and Ariel Usher combined for 27 points for Cignal.
