GENERIKA-Ayala A’s Fiola Ceballos and Patty Orendain secured a seat in the quarterfinals of the Philippine Super Liga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup, defeating Cocolife A’s Nene Bautista and Danika Gendrauli, 21-7, 21-18, at Sands by the Bay on Wednesday.
Last year’s runners up, Ceballos and Orendain finished Pool A with a 1-1 win-loss card and will face Foton’s Nieza and Jiziela Viray on Saturday. Ceballos and Orendain lost to Petron XCS’s Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons on Wednesday.
“Kasi importante ang game namin kasi do-or-die,” said Ceballos. “Nag-adjust kami sa errors talaga kasi sobrang daming errors ang nagpatalo sa amin.”
“Sa next games ’yung depensa namin dapat synchronized pa ang galawan namin ni Patty sa loob ng court and avoid ang errors,” she added.
Rondina and Pons advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-0 card after a 21-19, 21-10 win over Cocolife A’s Nene Bautista and Danika Gendrauli.
The Viray twins of San Beda University, the NCAA beach volleyball defending champion, bested Smart’s Cecilla Bangad and Caitlyn Viray, 21-10, 21-17.
F2 Logistics duo Mich Morente and Fritz Gallenero beat Cocolife B’s Marge Tejada and Alexandra Tan, 21-16, 21-11.
In the men’s division, Sands by the Bay’s Bryan Bagunas and James Natividad defeated Cocolife’s Joshua Ylaya and JP Pareja, 21-10, 21-13, to top Pool A.
Mike Abria and Jessie Lopez of Cignal downed Philip Bagalay and Gregory Utupo of Smart, 21-14, 21-16, and Navy’s Alsali Pajiji and Relan Taneo, 21-17, 21-18, in Pool B.
