FOTON turned back defending champion Petron, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18, for a share of the lead in the second round of the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Saturday.
The University of Santo Tomas scoring pair of EJ Laure and Sisi Rondina led the way for the Tornadoes with 17 and 14 points, respectively, while National University stalwart Jaja Santiago added 14 markers.
“Thankful kami kasi we’re peaking at the right time and yun talaga yung target namin,” said Foton coach Vilet Ponce-De Leon.
Foton however, only had a short time to savor the victory as it faces fellow Group A unbeaten team F2 Logistics on Sunday, with the winner getting the top seed in the knockout semifinals.
“Ngayon ang ganda ng morale ng mga bata, even the players yung development nila, progression nila, sinasabi ko na how they’re peaking at the right time,” added Ponce De Leon. “Ang gandang pang boost ng confidence papuntang semifinals.”
None among the Tri-Activ Spikers finished in double figures.
Former UST queen Aiza Maizo-Pontillas finished with eight points, while the Far Eastern University tandem of Bernadeth Pons and Mary Palma chipped in seven and six markers respectively.
Petron dropped to 0-2 and will face RC Cola Army on Sunday.
