GRETHCEL Soltones returned to action and powered PLDT Home Fibr to sweep Sta. Lucia 25-19, 25-19, 25-13, for its first win in the Philippine Superliga Invitational Conference on Saturday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
After missing their dismal three-set loss to Cignal due to viral infection last Tuesday in Bacoor City, Soltones returned with an impressive 12-point output as the Power Hitters tied the Lady Realtors with 1-1 win-loss record in Pool A.
Soltones nailed eight attacks, three service aces and a block including eight excellent receptions to torch Sta. Lucia in one hour and 19 minutes.
“Malaking bagay si grethcel offensively, defensively,” said PLDT head coach Roger Gorayeb. “Maganda compared sa nakaraan namin talagang sobrang panget ng nilaro namin doon. Masaya naman ako kasi nakabawi kami doon sa dismal performance namin.”
Jerrili Malabanan and Jorelle Singh were also instrumental putting up 12 and 11 points, respectively, to bounce back from last game’s lethargic attacking, where setters Jasmine Nabor and Gel Cayuna were the top scorers combining for 14 points.
Nabor also made up for the team’s poor setting in the campaign opener as she dished out 18 excellent sets on top of 11 digs and four markers this time.
“Hiniling ko naman sa lahat pati sa attacker at setter, consistency lang lalo ngayon kulang kulang kami mahirap punuan yung pwesto ni Aiko (Urdas),” said Gorayeb.
Urdas is still recovering from a knee injury she sustained in practice last conference, while Shola Alvarez, who was under the weather, also missed the match.
Pam Lastimosa and Amy Ahomiro led Sta. Lucia with eight and seven markers, respectively. The Lady Realtors missed Fil-Am spiker MJ Phillips due to shoulder injury.
