PLDT Home Fibr took advantage of a struggling Generika-Ayala for a 25-23, 14-25, 25-15, 25-18 victory in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference on Thursday at the Arena in San Juan City.
Czarina Carandang was one of the several Power Hitters coming off the bench, who stepped up and joined the troika of Grethcel Soltones, Aiko Urdas and Jerrili Malabanan to upset the third-running Generika-Ayala in one hour and 48 minutes.
Carandang came off the bench in the first set and led the charge with team-high 13 points off 10 kills, a pair of blocks and an ace. Malabanan and Urdas had 12 points apiece, while Soltones added 10 markers laced with 20 excellent receptions.
Veteran libero Liz Pantone also protected PLDT’s floor with 31 digs and 15 excellent receptions.
“Bumabalik na yung service reception namin yun naman talaga problema namin nung nakaraan hindi kami makaatake kasi wala kaming receive,” said PLDT head coach Roger Gorayeb. “At ngayon nagstep pa yung mga pinamalit ko na player: si Angel (Cayuna), (Gen) Casugod at si Carandang.“
Besides Carandang, back-up setter Cayuna dished out 14 excellent sets in top of five points, while substitute spikers Shola Alvarez and Casugod were also instrumental with eight and six markers, respectively.
PLDT improved to a 5-8 win-loss record, bouncing back from its five-set defeat to Cignal last Tuesday in Muntinlupa City.
But Gorayeb already accepted the fact that they are already the No.6 seed team heading into the quarterfinals even they still have one last preliminary match against F2 Logistics on Saturday in Cagayan De Oro.
“Wala na kaming habol hindi naman na kami aangat sa panalo kong, kaya lang yung confidence namin ibalik namin,” Gorayeb said. “Para at least mabalik yung dating laro kasi very important yung quarterfinals. One miss, you die. Pag panalo automatic semifinals.”
Coming off a 30-point explosion, Fiola Ceballos had 16 point, while Mean Mendrez and Patty Orendain added 10 and nine markers, respectively, as Generika-Ayala finished the preliminaries with an 8-6 record.
The Lifesavers are still unsure of the No.3 spot as Foton (7-5) and Cignal (7-6) are still in hunt with their remaining games.
