PHILIPS Gold survived an error-strewn match, downing Foton, 25-18, 24-26, 25-21, 15-25, 15-13, on Saturday in the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Despite giving away 42 points through errors, the Lady Slammers held on in the fifth set to end the first round of elimination on a high note and with a 2-3 win-loss card.
National U standout Myla Pablo scored 21 and former La Salle skipper Michele Gumabao had 16 as Philips completed the match in two hours and 28 minutes.
Rossan Fajardo from College of St. Benilde added 14, and Desiree Dadang of NU scored 12 , respectively, for Philips Gold, which moved to fourth spot.
“Mahalaga ’yung panalo to end the first round, kasi morale booster ’yun para sa mga players,” said Philips Gold Francis Vicente.
The Tornadoes took a slim 7-6 lead in the fifth after four Philips Gold miscues. Fajardo tied the contest at 7 and the Lady Slammers went on to take a 10-7 lead.
Foton went on a 5-1 run that made it 12-11, with University of the Philippines top hitter Nicole Timazon unloading four points and fellow rookie Pam Lastimosa of University of Santo Tomas blocking Gumabao’s attempt.
The see-saw match continued until Gumabao came up with a power hit and Patty Orendain’s attack error pushed Philips Gold to match point. Hazel Mea’s block on Lastimosa’s spike sealed the win for Philips Gold.
Nicole Tiamzon scored 21 points, while Orendain and Lastimosa added 10 apiece for Foton, which had its two-match win streak stopped, although it remained in second spot behind Petron.
The Tordanoes lost key player Dzi Gervacio, who hurt her left knee in the second set when Foton was leading, 15-11 .
