    Philips Gold quick to pounce on Shopinas 'weakness,' thanks to tips from Gohing and Gumabao

    PHILIPS Gold pounced on’s weakness as the expansion team pulled off a hard-earned 25-11, 16-25, 25-20, 13-25, 15-11 win in the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Wednesday.

    National University standout Myla Pablo led Philips Gold with 18 points, while skipper Michele Gumabao added 15, Desiree Dadang had 14, and Filipino-American setter Iris Tolenada chipped in 10.

    Coach Francis Vicente also credited both Gumabao and Melissa Gohing for helping the team strategize its game plan against, handled by their former coach at La Salle Ramide de Jesus.

    “Nag-uusap-usap kami kung ano ang game plan and may kasama ‘yung revelation kung ano ‘yung weak point ng kabila,” said Vicente. “Thanks to Gumabao and Mel for the revelation.”

    Both Gumabao and Gohing played under de Jesus at La Salle for five years.

    The win allowed the Lady Slammers to bounce back from a 23-25, 16-25, 25-22, 17-25 loss to Petron last Tuesday and improve their record to 3-4.

    “Lahat sila nagwork as a team. Bawat isa na ipasok gumagawa talaga. Nakakatuwa na kahit sino sa kanila gumagawa,” said Vicente.

    After a sluggish fourth set loss, Philips Gold took an early 9-4 lead in the deciding set behind a 5-1 spurt.

    Then Kim Dy came in at the right time and scored back-to-back hits to bring closer, 8-10.

    But committed untimely back-to-back errors to hand Philips Gold the match point 14-11, before Gumabao sealed the win with a down the line attack.

    Paneng Mercado made 19 points for, while Cruz added 13.

    The Lady Clickers now carry an even 3-3  card for a share of second spot with Foton.
