PHILIPS Gold finally broke into the winning column at the expense of sister team Mane 'N Tail, 25-19, 27-25, 25-16, in the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Monday night.
Rookie Myla Pablo led the way with 14 points, anchored on 12 spikes, while skipper Michele Gumabao and Rossan Fajardo each had 10 markers for Philips Gold, which put a stop to a two-game losing streak for a share of the fourth spot with Mane 'N Tail (1-2).
After a straight-set loss to Shopinas.com the day before, Philips Gold mentor Francis Vicente said he did not scold his wards but instead gave them an inspirational talk before the Mane 'N Tail match.
“Before the game I gave them an inspirational talk and told them to just enjoy the game,” he said. “Nag-adjust kami sa rotation ng tao and told them to just place their service inside and play defense lang sa net and not on the floor.”
The win also ended a 16-game losing streak for Vicente dating back to his coaching stint in the recently conluded UAAP women's volleyball tournament where his University of the East Lady Warriors went 0-14.
Trailing by as much as five points, 6-11, in the third set, the Lady Slammers went on a 13-1 attack to post a comfortable 19-12 advantage.
