SANTO Domingo, Ilocos Sur — Petron recovered from a set down to score its second win in as many matches and keep newcomer Mane ’N Tail winless in two outings in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix on Saturday at the Santo Domingo Coliseum.
Alaina Bergsma of the US played despite battling flu and came up with 25 points as Petron downed Mane ’N Tail 21-25, 25-16, 25-21, 29-27. Petron joined Cignal on top at 2-0, while Mane N’ Tail dropped to the bottom with a 0-2 card.
The former top US college player registered 18 spikes, three blocks and four service aces for the Blaze Spikers, while Mina Aganon and Dindin Santiago chipped in 15 and 11, respectively.
"Si Alaina may trangkaso pa 'yun, nag-chills pa kaninang umaga, nag 38/39 pa ang teamparature niya," said Petron coach George Pascua.
"Buti si Dindin sa crucial gumawa kasi hindi ko na gaanong pinapapalo si Bergsma sa back line para kahit papano makapahinga," he added.
The players, especially the imports, struggled in the oven-hot Santo Domingo Coliseum.
"Sumabay kami sa laro ng kalaban tapos isang factor pa 'yung init lalo na sa mga imports hindi sanay," said Pascua. "Kaya ang sabi ko sa mga (players na) nasa labas lagyan ng ice ang batok para ma-refresh 'yung mga naglalaro."
Mane ’N Tail took charge in the fourth set, 15-10, after a 6-1 run, but Petron retaliated with its own 7-2 blast sparked by Bergsma's three consecutive points to tie the game at 20.
Tied at 27, Santiago scored on a quick attack and Kristy Jaeckel hit the ball out from a back row spike to hand Petron the win.
Jaeckel had a conference high 37 points from 33 spikes, two blocks and one service ace.
The American import matched Santiago's 37-point record in the All Filipino Conference.
