SISI Rondina and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas lifted defending champion Petron in demolishing PLDT Home Fibr, 25-19, 25-15, 25-9, for its seventh consecutive victory in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference on Tuesday at the Arena in San Juan City.
The two University of Santo Tomas stars of different generations showed the way for the Blaze Spikers to dispatch the struggling Power Hitters in just 90 minutes to keep their hold of the solo second place.
Rondina, who usually comes off the bench, started for the Blaze Spikers and nailed 11 kills for 12 points including 20 digs, while her senior Pontillas delivered 10 points.
Middle blockers Mika Reyes and Remy Palma were also instrumental with nine points apiece as well as skipper Ces Molina adding eight markers laced with 12 digs, while setter Rhea Dimaculangan dished out 18 excellent sets.
Petron tightened its grip of the second place with 9-1 win-loss record, winning seven games in a row, behind unbeaten leader F2 Logistics (8-0).
“Sobrang laki (nitong winning streak) kasi galing din kami sa hindi magandang start nung ilang games namin,” said Petron head coach Shaq Delos Santos. “Kailangan maibalik at madagdagan pa namin yung laro namin kasi all-out yung mga teams i-bibeat ka nila hanggat kaya nila.“
The Blaze Spikers waxed hot in attacking with 47 kills shackling the Power Hitters, who struggled offensively with only 25 attacks and was badly beaten in the third frame with only nine markers in the set.
“Happy kami kahit papaano kasi unti-unti na naming naipapakita yung laro ng team. Hopefully, mas magtuloy-tuloy pa kasi intense na rin yung mga games malapit na yung quarterfinals,” Delos Santos said.
Nobody scored in double figures for PLDT with Aiko Urdas having eight points, while setter Jasmine Nabor being the second top scorer of with six markers on top of 13 excellent sets as her team dropped to 3-7 card.
