SISI Rondina delivered five of the last six points in the fifth set as Petron survived Foton, 28-26, 25-27, 25-21, 24-26, 15-12, to settle for the bronze medal in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Licking the wounds of their back-to-back five-set losses to Cignal that shattered their ‘three-peat’ bid, Rondina refused to lose their final game of the conference as she sparked a comeback from down 9-11 in the fifth set, scoring five vicious attacks for a 6-1 run to finish with a bronze medal.
“Siyempre sobrang happy and thankful kay Lord kasi syempre kasi may medal pa rin, gold yun eh, matagal lang naluma,“ beamed Petron head coach Shaq Delos Santos sharing a laughter with the reporters.
“Lesson learned. Ganun talaga dapat ready sa lahat ng pwedeng mangyari sabi ko sa kanila lalabas tayo sa dugout na di dapat mahiya. No matter what happens sobrang proud kami,” added Delos Santos, who coached despite nursing an allergy.
Rondina unleashed 33 points built on 30 attacks, a pair of blocks and an ace to lead the Blaze Spikers.
Ces Molina had 15 points and 17 digs, while middle blockers Mika Reyes and Remy Palma added 11 markers apiece sending Foton’s Jaja Santiago a rude farewell before flying to Japan for her second season as Ageo Medics’ import.
Dindin Santiago-Manabat forced the decider nailing the big blows in the fourth set and finished with 26 points, while Jaja played her last PSL game for now with 22 points bannering Foton’s balanced attack.
Rookies Marian Buitre and Eya Laure had 11 points apiece. Shaya Adorador added 10 markers, while setter Gyselle Sy 16 excellent sets and 20 digs only for the Tornadoes to come up short against the Blaze Spikers for the third time this conference.
