PETRON’S not done rocking the Philippine Super Liga even with the shocking acquisition of Mika Reyes from F2 Logistics.
San Miguel Corp. was serious when it revealed its plan of a total revamp for the new PSL season as it tapped the services of two current and two former University of Santo Tomas stars to bolster their quest to regain lost glory.
Hard-hitting spiker Sisi Rondina and veteran setter Rhea Dimaculangan have moved out of Foton’s camp, while middle blocker Ria Meneses also left Generika to team up at Petron and join returning player Mela Tunay.
“Seryoso talaga ang Petron (management) sa pagbuo ng team na mananalo ng championship,” said a source. “Bago matapos ang 2016 ‘yung ang marching orders galing sa taas eh. Ngayon in action na ang mga plano.”
Tunay, however, will only play for the month-long Invitational Conference before she resumes with her modeling and hosting career, while Rondina and Meneses will join the team in the All-Filipino after the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament.
Nevertheless, with the acquisition of Reyes, Rondina, Meneses, Dimaculangan and Tunay to beef up the current roster led by former Queen Tigress Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Bang Pineda, Jen Reyes and Ces Molina, Petron is hopeful that the team will finally end a year-long title drought.
But the source stressed that the management is not done dealing.
“Alam namin na si Mela is only good for the Invitational (Conference) lang kasi she has other things to do and sina Sisi and Ria naman may UAAP so wala sila sa Invitational but we’re always ahead of our game,” said the source.
The team will tap Far Eastern University stars Bernadeth Pons and Remy Palma, who already suited up for the Tri-Activ Spikers last year, while Kyle Negrito might also follow suit as Dimaculangan’s understudy after the departure of long-time setter Acy Masangkay.
The Tri-Activ Spikers last won a championship in 2015 All-Filipino Conference, when a triple threat of Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Aby Marano and Rachel Anne Daquis led the team to a rare 13-0 sweep just after a successful 2014 Grand Prix campaign when American import Alaina Bergsma and Brazilian setter Erica Adachi carried the team to its first title.
The PSL team owners will meet on Tuesday and the teams will formally present their 10-woman roster.
