PETRON overcame Cignal, 25-11, 20-25, 25-22, 25-27, 16-14, to stay unbeaten in the Philippine Superliga Invitational Conference on Saturday at the Caloocan Sports Complex.

Sisi Rondina and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas showed the way as the Blaze Spikers avoided another loss at the hands of the team that eliminated them from the All Filipino Conference.

Rondina scored 33 points on 29 attacks and four aces as Petron remained unbeaten in five matches.

Aiza Maizo-Pontillas had 21 points for Petron, which took the Pool C lead as Mylene Paat, Rachel Anne Daquis and Alohi Robins-Hardy committed three straight errors in the endgame.

“Kailangan naming tanggalin yung sumpa na yun. Ang ginawa namin, hindi kami tumigil. Basta nasa taas yung bola. Stick to the game plan kami,” said Rondina.

Bernadeth Pons had eight markers, 19 digs and six excellent receptions for Petron, one win away from a sweep of the preliminaries.

Petron battles PLDT on Sunday in San Juan.

Petron will face the No. 2 team from Pool D in the knockout semifinals on Tuesday at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center.

Paat scored 20 points, Daquis had 16 points including seven of the team’s 13 blocks, while Jovelyn Gonzaga had 10 points and 21 digs.

Robins-Hardy dished out 20 excellent sets and scored nine points.

Cignal absorbed its first defeat in six matches for second spot in Pool C and will face the No. 1 team in Pool D in the do-or-die semifinals.
