PETRON bounced back from a dismal performance in the tournament opener, whipping Meralco, 25-15, 25-14, 25-19, on Tuesday in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at The Arena in San Juan.
Brazilian reinforcement Rupia Inck had 15 points, while Dindin Santiago-Manabat added 12 for the Blaze Spikers, who lost to Cignal in five sets on opening day.
“It’s a challenge for us na makarecover kaagad at para tumaas ang morale ng mga players kailangan straight sets ang panalo,” said Blaze Spikers coach George Pascua.
Petron needed an hour and 12 minutes to take the win over Meralco, whose import Christina Alessi played limited minutes due to a sprained right ankle she suffered in the opener.
“’Yun na ang chance namin, kaya nag-take advantage kami sa blocking iba ’yung may malaki kaya nagcaptalize na kami wala ang malaki,” said Pascua.
The Blaze Spikers had 11 service aces after coming up with just five in the first match.
Libero Jen Reyes registered 13 of the team’s 19 excellent sets.
“Nag-improve kami sa mga kakulangan namin sa first game lalo na sa receive at saka services,” said Pascua.
With the score tied at eight in the third, Petron went on a 7-0 run to take full control.
Rachel Anne Daquis scored seven, while setter Erica Adachi also had seven points and dished out 19 of Petron’s 22 excellent sets.
Skipper Cha Cruz scored 12 points for Meralco, winless in two starts.
