PHILIPS Gold downed Cignal, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-17, on Saturday to salvage third place in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at Imus Sports Complex in Cavite.
American imports Alexis Olgard and Bojana Todorovic led the way for the Lady Slammers, who as top seeds lost to No. 4 Foton in the semifinals.
Olgard a middle blocker out of University of Southern California, scored 25 points with 21 hits, while Todorovic, a member of the UCLA squad that won the 2011 NCAA championship, registered 23 points, eight digs and 23 of the Lady Slammers’ 33 excellent receptions.
The Lady Slammers completed the win in almost hours, matching their finish in the Grand Prix last year.
“Ok na ’yun, ok na sa akin ’yung third place. Third din naman kami last year so it’s a good finish for us,” said coach Francis Vicente.
“It is just unfortunate na natalo kami sa Foton sa semis,” he added, noting that the players did well to refocus after a disappointing five-set loss to the Tornadoes in the semis.
“Kailangan kasi meron kang encouragement sa kanila kasi kapag sinermonan mo lalo mada-down mga ’yan. ’Di kasi basta-basta sermon ka lang nang sermon dapat nasa lugar din.”
“Eh gusto nilang lumabas, mag-jamming, kaya ayun sumama ako kanina nga before the game sabi ko sa kanila just enjoy the game and huwag magpa-pressure,” he added.
Ariel Usher scored 20 points, while Amanda Anderson added 17 markers for Cignal, which bowed to second seed Petron in the semifinals.
