NATIONAL University cemented its status as one of the most dominant teams in women’s volleyball by winning the Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Pre-season Championship for a third straight time.
The defending UAAP champions outlasted rivals the La Salle lady Spikers, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-20, on Sunday to complete a hat-trick of SSL championships at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
NU bagged its fourth overall SSL title after winning the National Invitationals earlier this year.
Over a month since the Lady Spikers halted NU’s 28-game win streak in Round 2 of prelims play in the UAAP, Belen & Co. responded with seven straight victories and just one set dropped against their rivals.
The promise of a rookie-laden Taft side, 14 to be exact, simply couldn’t overcome the championship pedigree and Alas Pilipinas experience embedded in the current crop of Lady Bulldogs.
Fresh off a one-of-a-kind grand slam with Creamline in the pros, seven-time PVL champion head coach Sherwin Meneses was a winner once more in his first local tournament with NU.
The new Lady Bulldogs shot-caller won in each and every stop of his three-day trip from Manila where he won Game 1 with NU on Friday, to Ilocos Sur that saw Creamline dominate Akari on Saturday, and back to Manila where he’d earn another crown jewel to one of Philippine volleyball’s most decorated coaching resumes.
