WHILE San Miguel players cheered for sister team Petron on Thursday night, Cignal had Mahindra player Rey Guevarra on its side in the Belo-Philippine Super Liga Invitational Conference.

Arwind Santos and his teammates were conspicuous at the patron section of The Arena in San Juan while Guevarra sat alone at the farthest part of the lower box section.

“Nakaka-enjoy din kasi manood ng volleyball, sobrang iba rin ang energy kapag nanood ka, ‘yung fans. Nag-eenjoy din kami (basketball players) manood (ng volleyball) eh,” said the former Letran star.

When asked which side he’s rooting for, Guevarra was quick to answer, “Cignal.”

Pressed for reasons why, he said that he likes underdog teams like Cignal and brushed off whispers that he is rooting for a prominent member of the HD Spikers.

“Gusto ko lang talaga ang team na ‘to,” he said.

“Wala, wala naman (particular na player) ako sinusuportahan. Bulong lang ‘yun, ‘wag ka nagpapaniwala sa bulong,” the three-time slam dunk champion added laughing.

Turning serious, the seven-year PBA veteran said he has always been an avid volleyball fan, having played the sport during intramurals when he was an Information Technology student in Letran.

“Noon sa Letran, kapag Intrams kung basketball ka varsity bawal ka maglaro ng basketball so volleyball nilalaro ko noon,” he said.

“Nanonood talaga ako, dati noong Meralco ako pinapanood ko rin ‘yung Meralco (na Super Liga team),” he added.
