Army shoots down Cignal to gain No. 4 spot in Super Liga GP playoffs

RC Cola Army ended the elimination round on a high note, scoring a 25-16, 25-9, 25-23, win over lowly Cignal on Thursday in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at The Arena in San Juan.

Jovelyn Gonzaga sparkled both on offense and defense with 17 points, 11 digs and six excellent receptions for the Lady Troopers.

The Lady Troopers ended the eliminations with a 4-6 record for fourth spot.

"This time gusto lang namin maibalik lang ang winning tradition ng team," said RC Cola Army coach Kungfu Reyes. "This time kasi kanya kanyang bitbit ng bawat isa so pang morale booster din ang panalo na ito."

Army battles No. 5 Generika in the playoff for a semifinal spot.

"Hopefully makalusot kami sa laro sa Sunday, malamang (against) Generika, bakbakan na 'yun kasi papasok ng semis," he added.

"Sabi ko sa kanila kalimutan na ang mga masasasmang nilaro, 'yung mga lesson learned na nakuha namin ang ginagawa naming motivation para umakyat sa semis," he added.

Royse Tubino scored 10 points, while skipper Tina Salak made all of the Lady Troopers’ 19 excellent sets.

American import Laura Schaudt and former San Beda ace Janine Marciano had seven markers apiece for Cignal, which absorbed its seventh consecutive loss.

The No. 8 HD Spikers face No. 4 F2 Logistics in the playoff.
