De Jesus banking on familiarity, championship pedigree as F2 Logistics go for the kill

RAMIL de Jesus felt that change is in the air after gaining the upper hand in a best-of-three finals series for the first time in three tries in the Philippine Super Liga.

With the veteran mentor at the helm, F2 Logistics defeated Foton, 25-20, 25-14, 9-25, 20-25, 15-10, in Game One of the All Filipino Conference finals at The Arena in San Juan on Thursday night.

De Jesus' teams have reached the big stage three times, starting with the Generika squad he led to the finals in the 2014 Grand Prix against Petron and the following year with the same team renamed reaching the battle for the All Filipino conference crown also against the Tri-Activ Spikers.

But a PSL title remained elusive for the nine-time UAAP champion coach, which is why he savored seeing F2 Logistics taste a finals lead for a change.

“First win (ko sa Finals), alam naman natin na medyo dehado ‘yung team, (pero) sa totoo lang kasi siguro sa ngayon iba na ang situation,” said de Jesus.

“Mas alam ko nang patakbuhin ang team kasi matagal na hawak ko ang core nitong team, so alam ko ang weakness, alam ko ang strength. So kung ano ang gusto kong ipagawa, magagawa," he added.

De Jesus is all the more confident with the championship pedigree of his team. Ara Galang, Mika Reyes, Kim Fajardo, Kim Dy, and Dawn Macandili were part of the Season 78 champion team, while Aby Marano was a member of the three-peat success from 2011-2013 and Cha Cruz was part of the 2011 and 2012 championship.

“Possible ‘yun (dahil sa championship experience) kasi isa sa mga motivation ng mga players like sina Ara, Kim Fajardo, si Macandili and then samahan mo ng Aby Marano malaking bagay ‘yun. Andyan pa sila Yeye, sila Cha at Paneng (Mercado),” said de Jesus.

F2 Logistics has the chance to join Philippine Army, Petron and Foton as the only champs of the three-year old league so far if they defeat the Tornadoes on Saturday.
