PHILIPS Gold pocketed a fourth consecutive win as it survived a fiery Foton side, 25-18, 26-24, 22-25, 23-25, 15-13, to end the first round of elimination of the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix on a high note at The Astrodome on Sunday.

Bojana Todorovic , a member of the University of California, Los Angeles which won the 2011 NCAA championship, unloaded 29 points for the Lady Slammers, while University of Southern California alum and fellow import Alexis Olgard finished with 22 points.

Todorovic was also steady defensively as she registered nine digs and ahd 17 of the team’s 30 excellent receptions.

Myla Pablo also joined the scoring rampage for Philips Gold with 17 markers.

The Lady Slammers, who had a flat start to the conference, are now in solo second spot with a 4-1 record behind unbeaten Cignal (5-0).

It was also the team’s fourth five-setter match.

“Swerte, puro five sets eh,” said Philips Gold coach Francis Vicente. “Pag na-straight namin ‘yun ang hindi swerte.”

“Happy naman ako sa outcome kaya lang very tense, sakit sa puso nanalo ka na two sets bibitaw third, fourth sets.”

The Lady Slammers had the game under control early on, but collapsed in the next two sets.

“Masyadong tense, masyadong gigil (ang mga players ko) gustung-gusto manalo ng three sets,” said the veteran mentor. “Eh for me it doesn’t matter kung three sets. For me importante nanalo ka.”

“Nasa adjustment period pa lang kami ‘wag masyadong gigil kasi the opponent can also convert,” he added.

“I-three sets mo pero ang kalaban ‘di na lumalaban, eh kanina lumalaban pa eh. ‘Di mo matatapos ‘yun ng three sets.”

Vicente cited the good and bad effect of the Lady Slammers’ desire to win in straight sets, but mentioned that it’s riskier to have that kind of attitude during games.

“Good siya kasi gigil, atat manalo pero you have control your emotion kasi what happens to your body nade-deterioate muscles, ang body and mind wala ka na gagawin patayin mo ang kalaban. Mas mabuti kumuha ka na ng kutsilyo patayin mo na ang kalaban,” he said.

“Bad siya kasi ang kalaban malaki rin, it can block you and they have a good defense. ’Yung libero nila si (Bia) General magaling ‘yun, si Jaja, 6-4, malaking tao katapat ni Olgard.”

“Happy naman ako sa outcome kaya lang very tense,” he continued. “Ang sakit sa puso nanalo ka na two sets bibitaw ka pa sa third and fourth sets.”

Lindsay Stalzer finished with 28 points for Foton, while Katie Messing added 20 and Jaja Santiago chipped in 13 markers.

The Tornadoes absorbed their third consecutive loss after winning their opening game of the conference for a share of the fourth spot with RC Cola Air Force (1-3).
