Marching orders to Petron: 'Revamp lineup, reclaim lost PSL glory'

BARELY a week after the 2016 Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix ended, Petron is already looking to revamp its roster and find more players to beef up the team and improve on their runner-up finish for next season.

From a successful campaign in the 2014 Grand Prix and a rare 13-0 season sweep in the 2015 All Filipino conference, the Tri-Activ Spikers  got grounded as they finished second in last year's import-flavored conference and had a rough 2016 after they placed fourth in the All-Filipino and another heartbreaking runner-up finish to end the year.

Petron hopes for a turnaround next year as team executives gave orders to strengthen their recruitment efforts and reclaim lost glory.

"Nagkaroon kami ng meeting and ang sabi na revamp kami ng players," said Petron assistant coach Ian Fernandez on Wednesday during the team owners' meeting.

"So as of now we are looking for players and we are recruiting kasi as per sir Alfrancis, ang gusto daw ni boss RSA makakuha kami ng mga matatangkad and mas okay na players," he added.

As far as Fernandez is concerned, the team needs to have a dominating middle blocker, a go-to outside hitter and a quick-thinking setter to make up for the void left by American imports Serena Warner and prolific spiker Stephanie Niemer.

Although middle blocker mainstays CJ Rosario and Cherry Nunag and setter April Hingpit can do the job, the management wants to add more firepower.

"Kasi nakita niyo naman sa Grand Prix, half of the points were from the imports so kung aalis [sila], ang 50 percent ng opensa kailangan mapunan 'yun," said Fernandez.

"Sa opinion ko, kailangan namin gitna. Okay naman sila (Rosario and Nunag) pero kailangan namin ng aggressive and dominating na gitna at saka presence of mind and syempre alertness at saka matibay na pang-finish na wing spiker at saka setter," he added.

The coaching staff, however, is yet to decide who to retain from the current squad.

"'Yun ang hindi pa namin alam (kung tanggal na ang players) magmi-meeting pa kami nina Sir Errol and ng coaching staff, pag-uusapan pa namin kung sino ang magse-stay," he said. "Meron na kami napipisil pero sa amin na lang din muna 'yun."
