Foton still in hunt for automatic semis spot in Super Liga after straight-sets win over Cignal

FOTON improved its chances for an outright semifinal berth with a 25-23, 25-15, 25-15 win over Cignal on Monday in the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference at Cuneta Astrodome.

Only five players scored for Foton, with Pam Lastimosa coming up with 17 in the match that lasted an hour and 19 minutes.

Nicole Tiamzon and Patty Jane Orendain scored 13 each, for the Tornadoes, who scored their fifth win in nine matches.

Angeli Araneta scored seven and skipper Ivy Remulla added five points Foton.

“Buhay pa sa semis,” said Foton coach Vilet Ponce de Leon, who is hoping to reach the semifinals outright and avoid the knockout quarterfinals set on Saturday in Quezon Province.

“We still need to win the next match para maganda ang ending namin ng elimination nasa top rank naman kami,” she said.

“Kasi if we will not go to Lucena it means nasa top 1 and 2 kami,” said Ponce de Leon. “Kaya sabi namin sige, we will not go to Lucena.”

Jeanette Panaga scored 11 for Cignal, which absorbed its sixth straight loss and remained at the bottom with a 1-8 card.
