BACOOR City —  Cignal import Jeanne Horton made a strong first impression after she led the HD Spikers to a 25-15, 28-26, 25-15 win over Cocolife in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix on Tuesday at Bacoor Sports Complex.

The 27-year old American import unloaded 24 points, from 19 kills and five service aces, and seven excellent receptions in a match that took an hour and 33 minutes to finish.

“Masunurin na player, kahit anong position walang problema sa kanya and I think she will be doing good for the rest of the tournament,” said Cignal coach Edgar Barroga of Horton.

It was a good start for Cignal, which failed to make it to the semifinals last year.

The HD Spikers had a shaky offseason after they lost their head coach George Pascua and key players Jovelyn Gonzaga and Janine Marciano due to injuries, along with Chie Saet, Paneng Mercado and Royse Tubino, who transferred to Cocolife.

“‘Yun nga eh, akala ng lahat wala na ang team pero ‘yun ang naging challenge sa akin na trabahuhin ko ito with the help of the coaching staff,” said Barroga.

“Although hindi kami magkakapante pero syempre ngayon nakita na nila kung sino si Cignal na kaya pala namin,” he added.

Bosnian import Sonja Milanovic also had 16 points for Cignal, which is currently tied with Petron and Foton with 1-0 win-loss card.

Serbian reinforcement Sara Klisura single-handedly carried Cocolife with 20 points, eight digs and 12 excellent receptions.
