FOTON finally scored its first win, downing the Kristy Jaeckel-led Mane ‘N Tail, 25-23, 25-22, 25-13, on Wednesday in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at the Cuneta Astrodome.

After five heartbreaking losses, Foton came up with a fine game to stop Mane ‘N Tail in straight sets, with Irina Tarasova scoring 13 points and Patty Orendain adding 11.

Elena Tarasova chipped in nine markers, Ivy Remulla also had eight, skipper Jill Gustillo contributed seven and veteran setter Rubie de Leon made six points for Foton.

“From the start of the competition we know what we lack and I told them if we are able to correct that, everything will be ok," said Foton coach Vilet Ponce de Leon, referring to their reception issues.

“Today I know we were successful in our first ball, sa service-receive namin,” De Leon said.

Foton had 17 excellent receptions in the match that took an hour and 25 minutes to finish.

De Leon added that the Russian imports wanted to make up for failing to deliver the expected numbers in previous matches due to injuries.

Against Cignal, Irina had a stiff neck in the first set and had to leave the match early, while Elena sprained her right foot although she played on.

“Actually they were crying kasi they are frustrated because they were not able to help the team. They cannot contribute,” she said. “Sabi pa sa akin ni Irina, coach, I want to go back to the game. But I did not let her because I don't want to risk her.”

Foton also was better in blocking (8-3) and scored more from the service line (8-5).

Jaeckel still leads all scorers with 199 points in 23 sets, scoring 27 points for Mane ‘N Tail from 24 spikes, two blocks and one service ace.

Mane 'N Tail dropped to fifth spot with a 2-4 card.
