Cignal relies on vast experience to put the brakes on fiery Petron start in PSL
Rachel Anne Daquis hits a spike against a two-woman Petron defense.

VETERAN team Cignal used its vast experience to turn back Petron, 11-25, 25-23, 29-27, 26-24, in the Philippine Super Liga All-Filipino Conference on Thursday at The Arena in San Juan.

Royse Tubino led the way with 16 points while national team members Jovelyn Gonzaga and Rachel Anne Daquis added 14 markers apiece as the HD Spikers won for the fourth time in five outings.

George Pascua admitted Cignal and Petron are almost equal in skills and talent but added his team’s maturity and his familiarity with Petron counterpart Shaq delos Santos proved to be their biggest advantage.

"Experience at maturity ng players ang nagdala sa amin,” he said. “Hindi kami nag-panic dahil beterano na sa ganoong sitwasyon ang mga players, alam na nila ang gagawin nila kahit 'yung mga nasa bench nagco-contribute.”

Pascua also noted that he knows delos Santos like the back of his hand. The two were together when Pascua led the Blaze Spikers to back-to-back titles in the 2014 Grand Prix and 2015 All-Filipino championships.

“Medyo familiar sa akin si Coach Shaq, medyo familiar sa akin and diskarte nila kung papano mag-adjust,” he said.

Maica Morada and Mumay Vivas added eight points for Cignal.

Sisi Rondina delivered the goods for Petron with 14 points while Bernadeth Pons added 12. Skipper Res Molina had nine, Mika Reyes chipped in eight and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas contributed seven.

The Blaze Spikers dropped to 3-2.
