Beauty queen Alaina Bergsma out to prove she's more than just looks as she eyes Super Liga title with Petron
“I came here looking for a championship, for another crown,” said Alaina Bergsma, the former Miss Oregon USA.

VIGAN, Ilocos Sur – Beauty titlist Alaina Bergsma wants to achieve another crowning glory by the time she leaves the country.

The Petron import said she’s not only loving the sights and sounds of the Philippines, but is also looking forward to cap her stay here with a championship in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix.

Bergsma, the 2012 Miss Oregon USA, is out making an impression that her volleyball skills are as good as her looks.

“I came here looking for a championship, for another crown,” the charming Bergsma told to a handful of Manila-based sportswriters who travelled all the way to Ilocos Sur for the first out-of-town games of the Grand Prix this season.

“I'm not saying that we are going to win for sure, but I know our team has that mindset and this year that's what were going for and win (the conference),” added the striking 6-foot-3 foreign player.

The Blaze Spikers are currently running second (1-0) in the standings behind to two-time runner up Cignal (2-0).

But a win by Petron against new comer Mane 'N Tail on Saturday at the Sto. Domingo Coliseum here will allow the team to tie the HD Lady Spikers on top.

Barely a month of staying here in the country, the American stunner already got a dose of Filipino hospitality. Her Twitter account even increased its following ever since she hooked up with Petron.

But aside from her physical beauty, the happily married Bergsma wanted to show that she is more than just a pretty face.

“For me, I want to show that you can be an athlete and be feminine and show the girly girl that you see on stage. (In fact) I love wearing heels,” she chuckled.

The cheerful spiker said she had the best of both worlds playing for the United States team and being in different parts of the world as a player while being a beauty queen at the same time.

She also considers both sports and beauty pageants as the same since both involves competition but in a different level.

“People forget it's a competition,” she said. “So when you're playing volleyball you're doing everything you can to win.”

“And when you're in a pageant, you 're still competing for the crown so you just do everything you're supposed to be doing to win.”

"But what a lot of people don't realize is that I'll be putting my best foot forward in both," she added.

But there's also a line that demarcates the easy and relaxed lifestyle in sports and the elegant and poise needed in beauty contests.

In sports, Bergsma said she has her team, a solid back up. But in the pageant world, she only has herself.

“In the pageant world it's not really a team activity,” she said. “To be in the volleyball (world) you'll be there with your teammates, but in the pageant world people say it's a sisterhood like you get along but at the same time no one really has your back, you're on your own."

And the 24-year old charmer knows how to take advantage of what she has.

"I can really help the team get more fans because people will be interested since I'm a beauty queen and a volleyball player, it will help the team get followers and fans," saud Bergsma, who was one of three muses San Miguel Beer had during the opener of the PBA’s 40th season last week.

Bergsma played in Puerto Rico in 2013 and in Brazil for seven months last year for the Brazilian Super Liga.
