AFTER a three-year hiatus, former San Sebastian Lady Stags star Mary Jane Pepito has bared plans to return to competitive action and revive her playing career.
Pepito was one of the top liberos in collegiate volleyball while playing for the Lady Stags during their glory years in the mid-2000s in the NCAA and Shakey’s V-League under head coach Roger Gorayeb.
Now 24 and a mother of two, Pepito now plans to return to the sport where she became one of the most popular players not only because of her talent but also because of her good looks.
“Gusto ko pong bumalik dahil kahit matagal akong nawala, passion ko pa rin ang volleyball,” said Pepito in an interview with Spin.ph.
A former Best Receiver and Digger in the NCAA and Shakey’s V-League, Mary Jane, or MJ to teammates and fans, admitted she still gets a lot of inquiries from fans on when she will play again after she left the volleyball scene in 2011.
Questions on when the San Sebastian libero will return from fans only grew especially with the recent formation of the Philippine Super Liga, a commercial volleyball league that gives a new lease on life to the volleyball careers of former college stars.
Incidentally, his sister Marge is playing in the Super Liga.
“Nagpapasalamat ako sa kanila,” said Pepito, referring to the fans. “Kahit nawala ka, may mga naghahanap pa rin at sumusuporta sa akin. Thank you talaga sa kanila.”
Pepito said she intends to return to volleyball if an opportunity arises, as she has been asking her friends and former teammates on whether there are teams in need of players, or when tryouts will be held so that she could prepare and get into playing form.
“Marami na rin ang opportunities ngayon kesa noon, kaya gusto ko uling subukan na maglaro,” said Pepito.
While being away from the sport, Pepito is busy taking care of her children. And even though she wasn't able to play competitively for years, Pepito finds a lot of fulfillment in rearing her children during her time away from volleyball.
“Mahirap na masaya,” said Pepito on being a mother. “Mahirap dahil sa nag-didisiplina ka at nag-aalaga talaga. Pero masaya kapag nakikita mo ‘yung mga anak mo na lumalaki.”
