MANE ‘N Tail finally snapped a three-match skid, downing Foton, 25-22, 28-26, 25-19, to start the second round of elimination on a high note on Monday in the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference at Cuneta Astrodome.
Former Perpetual Help star Honey Royse Tubino scored 23 points on 21 spikes, Danika Gendrauli added 11 points and Samantha Dawson chipped in with 10 as Mane ‘N Tail improved its win-loss record to 2-4.
“Malaking bagay siya sa paluan kabog kung kabog siya, kailangan lang talaga ’yung ugali niya,’yung emotion niya makontrol,” Mane ‘N Tail coach Rosemarie Prochina said about Tubino.
It was a huge win for Mane ‘N Tail, which last won two weeks ago over Cignal.
“Gusto i-prove ng mga bata na may ganoong galing sila sa volleyball,” said Prochina.
“I’m happy na napalabas ko ‘yun sa kanila,” she said. “Thank God sumusunod sila, sabi ko nga kapag sumusunod ang player mananalo talaga eh.”
Mane ‘N Tail put up a 16-10 lead in the third set, but Foton rallied with four consecutive points to inch closer 14-16.
Tubino sparked a 6-3 run, with Foton’s scoring two points on Mane ‘N Tail errors, to pull away, 23-17.
The Tornadoes stopped the Lady Stallions’ momentum after a Pam Lastimosa hit and an Abi Praca error gave Foton a chance, 19-23, but Nicole Tiamzon’s back-to-back outside hits handed Mane ‘N Tail the victory.
Prochina, whose squad needed an hour and 28 minutes to take the win, revealed breathing exercises helped them come up with good performances against Petron and Foton.
“Binigyan ko sila breathing relaxation,” she said. “Sa Petron five minutes ang breathing and relaxation nakita ko relaxed na relaxed sila kaya ngayon gumawa ako ng mas mahaba-haba mga 10 minutes.”
Mane ‘N Tail put up a tough challenge against Petron before bowing in five sets.
“I’m proud of my girls,” said Prochina. “Kasi sino naman mage-expect five sets sa Petron, uupak kung sa uupak talaga kami. Sabi ko lang mag-enjoy kayo and pakita niyo ano meron tayo, ayun umupak naman.”
Lastimosa scored 14 points, while Tiamzon had 10 for Foton, which now holds an even 3-3 card.
The Tornadoes were without Dzi Gervacio, who hurt her left knee on a bad fall during the match against Philips Gold on Saturday.
