FOTON import Lindsay Stalzer admitted that nerves got the best of the Tornadoes that caused their sluggish start, but expects that her team will show the same fighting heart that powered their comeback come Game Two of the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix Finals.

The defending champion was pushed to its limits after Petron took a 2-0 lead in the match. The Tornadoes woke up just in time and forced a decider en route to taking the opener of the best-of-three series, 20-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-9, on Thursday at The Arena in San Juan.

The Tornadoes saw themselves down again in the fifth set, 3-8, before they countered with an epic 12-1 run to escape with the win.

“It’s amazing that we came back and I guess we just got over our nerves, I think,” said the reigning MVP. “I don’t know why we’re nervous because I know we’re a good team. We finally showed it in the third, fourth and fifth set.”

“(But) no, we didn’t panic, we’re just trying to say we had to stay positive no matter what,” she added. “We’ll fight for every point, we’ll never give up.”

Stalzer pointed out that it was their own doing, with 34 errors, that almost caused them the match before they regained their composure.

“I don’t think that Petron did anything, I think we shot ourselves in the foot really,” she said. “We missed a lot of serves and we’re making some messy plays and weren’t converting and we weren’t hitting the ball very hard.”

“(In the third set) everyone was just really good with not hanging their heads. Ariel (Usher) was really good in giving some motivational speeches and that’s just part of our team. We know we can count on each other when we’re down,” she added.

Foton is looking to end the series on Saturday and Stalzer is hoping that they will not do the same mistakes again.

“No hopefully not, we just have to remember this is such a big game and everyone was giving all they’ve got,” she said. “The level is getting higher and higher, everyone’s fighting harder and harder for every point.”
