THAI import Kanjana Kuthaisong and Filipina outside hitter Fiola Ceballos showed the way as Generika-Ayala shocked Cignal, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22, on Thursday for its second win in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Kuthaisong and Ceballos played steady throughout, while Azeri reinforcement Kseniya Kocyigit put on the finishing touches after the Lifesavers fought back from a 12-17 deficit in the third.
Ceballos scattered 10 kills and four service aces for 14 points while making 13 digs and seven excellent receptions as Generika-Ayala completed the win in one hour and 50 minutes.
Kuthaisong also finished with 14 hits, while Kocyigit added 12 points including the last two hits in their third set comeback.
Coach Sherwin Meneses said the win only shows the Lifesavers can match up with any team in the league. The Lifesavers improved to 2-7 before the match against United Volleyball Club (4-3) on Thursday next week.
“Pinakiramdaman ko lang yung team kung low morale o hindi, hindi naman kasi yung mga locals nagpupush talaga magimprove everyday,” said Meneses. “Kasi napagusapan namin six five sets na kami kaya pwede namin matalo kahit sino pero depende pa rin sa lalaruin namin.”
“Naging maganda yung basic service receive namin. Hindi namin ineexpect matapos agad kasi nga magaling yung mga imports ng Cignal,” Meneses added.
Mylene Paat scored 15 and import Erica Wilson added 11 points for Cignal.
Ana Artemeva, the HD Spikers’ other import, struggled with six points.
Cignal, which slipped to 5-4, next battles unbeaten leader Petron (8-0) on Saturday at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan.
