FORMER Ateneo teammates Jhoana Maraguinot and Bea De Leon were happy to see each other again even they were on opposing ends of the court in the 2018 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference.
For the first time, the two Lady Eagles took on each other with Maraguinot scoring 11 points, although De Leon had the last laugh as Foton defeated Sta. Lucia, 25-14, 25-21, 19-25, 25-13, on Thursday at the Arena in San Juan City.
De Leon, who chipped in five points to help the Tornadoes bagged their third straight win, had fun facing her former teammate Maraguinot.
“It was funny naman kasi, siyempre, kapag naiisahan niya ako, sobrang hassle. Pero, I'm sure ganoon din 'yung feeling sa kanya,” De Leon said. “On-court naman nagtatawanan lang kami. I knew na kailangan ko talaga mag-focus kasi tatawa ako doon otherwise.”
Maraguinot, for her part, was reminiscent during their training sessoins in Ateneo where it was the only other time that they were against each other.
“Parang training lang noon sa Ateneo. Nagtatapat kami noon sa training,” shared the PSL rookie, who also had 11 excellent receptions only for the Lady Realtors to suffer their third loss. “For me, wala lang. Inaasar ko rin siya kasi ganoon lang din talaga kami. Seryoso siya sa game pero, pag nakita mo 'yung dati mong teammate nakakatawa lang talaga.”
Maraguinot decided to forego her final playing year after their Final Four loss to FEU in UAAP Season 80, while De Leon decided to play one last time.
The two were acquired by their PSL club teams in the previous Invitational Conference but their battle against each other was spoiled as Maraguinot was out that time due to her Patellar instability and vastus medialis oblique (vmo) injury.
Now that they are in different paths, both Ateneo stars were happy for each other playing in the PSL.
“Siguro, we've come a long way. I'm happy for her kasi nakita ko siya since first year siya sa Ateneo and ang rami niya ng narating,” Maraguinot said.
De Leon felt the same and she is happy to see how Maraguinot is slowly striving back to her strong form.
“I'm very happy for her. Just to see her back in form is great kasi she came from an injury we great,” she said. “Knowing na hindi pa siya 100 percent, alam ko na she has more in her than 'yung 11 points niya. I'm just really to see her.”
