THE recovery has been painfully slow, but Grethcel Soltones is determined to get back to top form.
Hampered by right shoulder injury in the past two Philippine Superliga conferences, Soltones has been showing flashes of her MVP form in PLDT matches in the All-Filipino, and she is hoping to sustain the fine performances.
“Siyempre matagal ng nawawala yung pangalan ko sa industriya ng volleyball kasi may injury ako,” said the three-time NCAA MVP with San Sebastian. “Ang hirap ng pinagdadaanan ko that time.”
“As a player, gusto mong bumawi diba so hindi ka makabawi kasi may injury ka e. So every game, I have to do my very best,” added the former national team member.
“Para naman maipakita ko sa company, lalong lalo na sa sarili ko na kaya ko pa, kaya kong maibalik from the injury.”
The 23-year-old spiker delivered a season-high 22 points on top of 12 digs and 10 excellent receptions as PLDT beat winless Marinerang Pilipina in four sets on Tuesday at the Arena in San Juan.
As PLDT won back-to-back, Soltones emerged as the leading scorer with 18.33 points and most consistent player also in floor defense.
“Si Grethcel naman kasi madaling kausap. Sinasabi ko sa kanya matagal ka na halos nawala sa volleyball, although nandiyan ka injured ka, hindi ka nagagamit, so unti unti ibabalik natin yung dati mong laro,” said Roger Gorayeb, PLDT coach and Soltones’ mentor since college.
However, Gorayeb says he is not convinced with the Power Hitters’ performances despite winning.
“Kahit naman po kami, makikita naman sa laro na pangit talaga yung nilalaro namin sa three games,” she said. “Sobrang baba na yung nilalaro namin tsaka kami umaangat. Pero andoon pa rin yung nakakalamang kami, tapos habol sila.”
The 5-foot-8 open spiker vows continue to work on her game and help PLDT rise as contenders.
“Kailangan mamba mentatlity ka talaga dito kasi walang recovery, walang rest e,” said Soltones. “Basta in every game lang, tinatatak ko sa sarili ko, sa utak ko na hindi, hindi pa rin ganun yung laro, hindi pa rin sapat every game para yung psychological effect sa sarili ko na gagawin ko yung best ko every game.”
