FOTON newcomer Gethcel Soltones hopes to accomplish in the Belo-Philippine Super Liga Invitational Conference what she fell short in doing despite four tries in her collegiate stint: to bring home a championship.
Soltones suited up for San Sebastian College in the NCAA for five years, led the Recto-based squad to four Finals appearances and bagged three consecutive MVP titles from Seasons 90-92 but all of her efforts went down the drain as she ended her collegiate career without a single championship in indoor volleyball.
But she now has a chance to win in a different arena, as Foton just secured its spot in the final round to join Petron, Cignal and a Japanese guest team Kobe Shinwa University.
“Gagawin namin ang best namin and sana hopefully makuha namin ang panalo. First panalo ko ito after NCAA, pero paghihirapan pa namin ‘yan syempre,” she said.
The cheerful spiker who hailed from Catmon, Cebu pointed out that she's happy to be where she is now.
“Okay lang naman, malaki ding adjustments tapos ilang days lang kami nagsama-sama bago kami sumabak dito pero enjoy kasi may matututunan akong bago. Kasi dito sa PSL malakasan din pala (ang competition),” she said.
“Favorite ko sa team ang bonding namin. Lagi kami kumakain sa labas, may dinner kami after ng game, simpleng labas lang ganoon. Tapos may bonding kami sa Starbucks kasi si coach Moro, sobrang hilig sa Starbucks,” she added.
Soltones also reportedly dreams of playing in international tournaments and staying with Foton can make her wish come true. Her contract with the Tornadoes is for the Invitational Conference only, but if she opts to stay, she can have the chance to see action in the AVC Asian Women’s Club Championship.
Grand Prix defending champion Foton will again compete in the AWCC on Kazakhstan in May.
