FOTON overcame Petron in five sets, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14, 19-25, 15-13, to remain the only unbeaten team in the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at The Arena in San Juan on Monday.
American imports Lindsay Stalzer and Ariel Usher led the way for the defending champion, while the tandem of Santiago sisters Dindin and Jaja also helped power the Tornadoes to take the solo lead with their fourth straight win in as many outings.
Stalzer fired 29 points, from 23 kills and four of the teams nine blocks and two service aces, while Jaja, who was converted to opposite spiker, added 19. Usher came up with 15 markers and Maika Ortiz chipped on 10.
Despite the win, Foton coach Moro Branislav was still ‘not impressed’ with his wards’ performance.
“I’m not impressed,” said the Serbian coach. “I think my team will be ready in 20 days.”
“I prepared a little change in the position of my players, Jaja today I change her position, it is very difficult, I’m taking a risk today,” he added.
Tied at 13-all in the deciding set, Ortiz pushed Foton at match point after a block on Stephanie Niemer before Santiago shut the door for the second time on Niemer as the Tornadoes romped to the win.
Niemer unloaded 38 points for Petron, 34 of the team’s 57 kills.
Petron suffered its first loss and dropped to 4-1.
