GLAUDINE Troncoso was honored after helping end Sta. Lucia’s disgruntling 10-game losing streak after her surprising clutch performance in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference.
The Lady Realtors’ unheralded recruit from Iloilo only played late third set but she proved her worth, emerging as Sta. Lucia’s hero and denying Marinerang Pilipina’s late comeback to close out a 25-17, 25-19, 31-29 victory on Tuesday at the Arena in San Juan City.
Fielded in the crucial part of the match, Troncoso showed she’s ready to step up anytime for the Lady Realtors as she delivered all her eight points in the lone frame she played that kept them afloat until they earned their second win in 12 outings.
Her mindset? The 21-year-old hitter didn’t want to waste the trust of her coaches and teammates.
“Sinusunod ko lang yung instructions ng mga coaches ko at nagta-trust ako sa mga kasama ko,” said Troncoso. “Magandang motivation mula sa mga kasama ko na chine-cheer nila ako kahit rookie ako.”
As Sta. Lucia overcame the hump, Troncoso also gained some confidence in her first club league experience.
“Masarap parang satisfaction na. Yung mga recent game namin parang may kaba pa, siyempre iba na tong PSL, high standard na ang nilalaro,” she said. “Ngayon, na-overcome ko na through the process and the coaches, who teach me how to be confident inside the court.”
The 5-foot-8 spiker was discovered when PSL went on tour in Ilo-ilo before the season. She joined the tryouts of Sta. Lucia and made it to the final line-up of the All-Filipino Conference.
Sta. Lucia head coach Babes Castillo knew that Troncoso is going to shine for her team as a five-time champion out of Central Philippine University in Western Visayas, which is also the alma mater of ex-national team star Jovelyn Gonzaga.
“Exactly what I saw then nung nandoon ako sa Ilo-ilo. Champion player kasi yan,” said Castillo on the rookie. “She may be young pero makikita mo na yung DNA of a champion player.”
Troncoso is just proud to show that Ilonggas belong to a club league, mostly composed of UAAP and NCAA players, and she is eager to continue proving it in the PSL.
“Thankful po ako sa mga coaches dahil binibigyan nila ako ng chance para ma-showcase yung talents ko dito,” Troncoso said. “Every game ko po, ino-offer ko sa parents ko, sa pamilya ko back sa Iloilo po. Yun lang iniisip ko tsaka maka-contribute po ako sa team at mapakita po namin na meron kaming ibubuga.”
